By Maj Lavonne Adams, SCWG/DDRA Shawfest 2008 "Thunder over the Midlands " was not intended to represent Tropical Storm Hanna, but immediately following the storm, approximately 50,000 people kept their eyes to the sky. Shaw AFB, Sumter, SC, hosted an air show which showcased America 's Airmen, the Air Force's leading technology, vintage aircrafts, extreme aerial demonstrations, and various displays on Sept. 6, 2008. Shawfest was an opportunity to show appreciation to the communities that support Team Shaw and all of our Armed Forces every day and to focus on alcohol and drug abuse, prevention and awareness. There was plenty for the crowd to see. The SC Wing CAP Drug Demand Reduction (DDR) Program worked in conjunction with Lacey Brown, DDR Program Manager, Shaw AFB and the Lexington Richland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council, Columbia, SC, in distributing promotional items and drug awareness pamphlets to the crowd. With the use of Cadet Ken, an excellent recruiting tool, cadets and seniors distributed red balloons and candy displaying DDR slogans for Red Ribbon Week. Although Red Ribbon Week is officially in October, it can be celebrated throughout the year. This was a unique opportunity to see, touch, and feel the excitement that was not only in the air, but on the ground. The cadets and seniors enjoyed meeting everyone from across the region and strengthening the wing’s bond within the local community. The participating squadrons were Anderson, Coastal Charleston, Florence, Greenville, Lexington, Murrells Inlet, Spartanburg, Sumter and York Composite and Camden Military Academy, Dent and Richland Cadet Squadrons. |

The 2008 South Carolina Wing Conference is right around the corner. It will take place on Saturday, 27 September 2008, at the Carolina Skies Club at Shaw AFB. The deadline for the regular registration rate is 15 September 2008 (postmark date). Late registration will be accepted after 15 September 2008 or on-site the morning of the start of the conference. A full day of activities is scheduled, including a special program for cadets. The Annual Awards Banquet will be Saturday evening at the same location. While USAF blues and either corporate uniform are the preferred dress at wing, region and national conference meetings and classes, the golf shirt uniform is acceptable. Flight suits are not acceptable. For a banquet, semi-formal civilian dress, such as a suit and tie for men and dressy attire for women, is acceptable, although formal and mess dress is preferred. Click here to download the PDF file with conference forms and hotels near Shaw AFB. The forms can also be found in the SC Paperless Wing Library under "Activities". |

Hurricane Update As of the 0800 hours (local), 6 September 2008, National Weather Service advisory this morning, Tropical Storm Hanna was located about 40 miles southeast of Raleigh, NC, with sustained winds of 50 miles per hour. Tropical storm warnings are discontinued for the South Carolina coast, but remain in effect for much of the rest of the eastern seaboard through New England. CNN reports the impact of the storm in our state was minimal, with slight flooding, high waves, and limited power outages in the Myrtle Beach area. Hurricane Ike, a major Category 3 storm, does not appear it will threaten the coast of the Carolinas. The current track shows the storm will most likely skirt the northern coast of Cuba and head into the Gulf of Mexico sometime between Tuesday and Wednesday morning. However, since these storms can be unpredictable, Civil Air Patrol members should continue to monitor activity and be prepared to assist if needed. A hearty “thank-you” is deserved for all CAP members who stood prepared for activation during the last week. Updates will be posted to this web site if further storm activity affects our state.
